Day 1 // North Platte, NE
Today we venture north as we head to the south... South Dakota, that is. We will spend the night in Nebraska to break up our scenic drive so we can be well-rested for our big day tomorrow.
Day 2 // Rapid City, SD
This afternoon we will receive a guided tour of a few stops on the Pine Ridge Reservation – the largest reservation in South Dakota. The Wounded Knee Memorial and White River Visitor Center are among the sites we will see today. A group dinner tonight will give time for reflection on all we have learned today.
Day 3 // Rapid City, SD
Today is sure to 'WOW'! Our morning will begin early so we are in place before the annual South Dakota buffalo roundup begins at Custer State Park. At this annual event, the wranglers on horseback will round up, brand, and sort through the large bison herd as part of the park's conservation efforts. This afternoon our step-on guide will take us to Mt Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial and give us some history of the area. Downtime this evening will give you a chance to rest from our busy day.
Day 4 // Rapid City, SD
This morning we begin with the 1880 Train for a narrated steam-powered train ride through the countryside between Keystone & Hill City in the historic Black Hills. Following our train ride, the Big Thunder Gold Mine will give us a guided tour of some of the old tunnels that were used for gold excavation. Tonight we are off to the Fort Hays chuckwagon dinner show to polish off an already spectacular day!
Day 5 // Rapid City, SD
Ta'Tanka is home to the 3rd largest bronze sculpture in the world! In the 1990s, actor Kevin Costner commissioned a bronze sculpture for a resort that was never built, but the sculpture was. Today the 14 larger-than-life pieces are displayed outside the city of Deadwood. Following our tour of Ta'Tanka, we will board the bus again for a guided tour of the town of Deadwood, SD. Known for it's rough gold-rush past, it is also the final resting place of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. Sturgis is famous for it's annual motorcycle rally every year with 10 days and nights of riding, food, and music for over 500,000 revelry attendees. It will be much quieter today, but we will learn more about the hobby that brings all these folks together at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame.
Day 6 // North Platte, NE
We begin our journey back home today, but not before visiting two more famous South Dakota attractions. The Badlands National Park is known for it rugged landscape and prolific fossil beds. Some time is still left to stop at the famous Wall Drug Store. Business in the 1930s was slow at the general store located ‘in the middle of nowhere' until they started offering free ice water to travelers passing through on their way to visit Mount Rushmore. Now they are a tourist destination as people want to see for themselves this unique part of America's history.
Day 7 // Home
Today is the last day of our trip and we have lots of miles to cover before we get home. Sit back and relax in your comfortable seats as the Nebraska countryside flies past your windows. Our journey to the great state of South Dakota may have ended, but there are so many more places in our amazing country left to explore! Where will you go next?
